The Hollywood Reporter are reporting that Harlan Ellison isclaiming that In Time is in fact heavily based on his own “famous and widely published science fictionshort” ‘Repent, Harlequin! Said TheTicktockman’
Ellison is no stranger to this kind of thing, having suedproducers Hemdale in the early 1980s, claiming that James Cameron’s TheTerminator borrowed many story points from at least two of his episodes of TheOuter Limits (Soldier & Demon With a Glass Hand). Whilst Cameron constantlydenied the allegations that matter was settled out of court.
In time has been written and directed by Andrew Nicol, whohas made a name for himself as a writer of quality Science Fiction films;notably Gattaca & The Truman Show. Nicol also Directed Gattaca, as well asthe less well received Sci-Fi film S1m0ne. Similarities between the stories areapparent, although that is by no means enough for a suit of this sort to win asthe rules are very deep and specific and tend to favour the concept thatsimilar ideas can be formed and not be copied. Both stories feature the idea ofpeople having an allotted time to live as well as police force known asTimekeepers. Nicol’s next film will be his adaptation of Stephanie Meyer’s TheHost.
Synopsis...
When Will Salas is falsely accused of murder, he must figure out a way to bring down a system where time is money - literally - enabling the wealthy to live forever while the poor, like Will, have to beg, borrow, and steal enough minutes to make it through another day.
